What types of exterior surfaces do you stain?
We specialize in staining various exterior wood surfaces, including cedar wood siding, redwood siding, decks, fences, log homes, and cabins.
Do you offer both solid and semi-transparent stains? What's the difference?
Yes…
We can apply all the types of stains available, such as:
- 100% Oil-Based Transparent Stains
- 100% Oil-Based Semi-Transparent Stains
- Solid Body Based Stains
Transparent Stains allow for you to be able to see the natural wood color itself. Basically giving a clear view of what the house is made of.
Semi-Transparent Stains allow the natural wood grain to show through, giving a more natural appearance while still providing protection and a color sheen to your liking.
Solid Body Stain provide a dense, opaque finish that conceals the wood grain, offering robust protection against UV rays and moisture.
How do you prepare a surface before staining?
Proper surface preparation is crucial for a lasting finish:
- Cleaning: Remove dirt, mildew, and as much of old finishes as possible using appropriate cleaners or pressure washing.
- Sanding: Smoothing the surface to ensure even stain application. This is only applied to areas with smooth surfaces already, rough cut lumber and siding don’t apply.
- Drying: We ensure the wood is thoroughly dry with a moisture meter before staining to prevent moisture-related issues.
- Application: Then apply the stain as needed for the surface.
Do you offer power washing or stripping services before staining?
Yes…
We Provide pressure washing services to effectively clean and prepare surfaces for staining.
No… Unfortunately, we discontinued this service last year in 2024 due to not having an effective enough product to strip the houses with and that was consuming to much of our time and the customers time.
Plus, the customer could never afford it. It’s a very long process and super messy!
How many coats of stain do you typically apply?
We will apply one to two coats of stain, depending on the wood’s condition and the desired finish. Usually, we follow the manufacturer’s recommended amount of coatings per product.
Do you use oil-based or water-based stains, and which do you recommend for Alaska's climate?
We use both oil-based and water-based stains.
Oil-based stains penetrate deeply and are often recommended for Alaska’s climate due to their durability and moisture resistance.
Water-based stains are eco-friendlier and dry faster but may not offer the same level of protection in harsh conditions. We usually only use these on vertical structures.
What brands of stain do you use, and why?
We use brands from our preferred vendor Sherwin Williams like SuperDecks. Also, other reputable brands like Cabot’s, known for their quality and performance in protecting wood surfaces in cold climates.
How does Alaska's cold and wet climate affect the staining process?
Alaska’s climate presents challenges like extended drying periods and potential moisture-related concerns. To enhance durability, selecting the right stains and applying them under favorable weather conditions is crucial.
How often should I re-stain my home in this climate?
Given Alaska’s climate, re-staining exterior wood surfaces every 2 to 3 years is recommended to preserve their protection and aesthetic appeal.
This is also a recommendation per some product manufacturers.
